Andhra Minister Roja Selvamani recalls her first film with Nandamuri Balakrishna

Actress-turned-politician Roja Selvamani, who was recently inducted into the Andhra Pradesh cabinet as Minister of Tourism, Culture and Youth Development, spoke about her co-actor and Hindupur MP Nandamuri Balakrishna while reminiscing about their first movie together.

Roja’s comments have now gone viral on the internet.

Roja said she has completed 30 years in the acting industry. Talking about Nandamuri Balakrishna’s star Bhairava Dweepam which featured Roja as Padmavathi, she said Bhairava Dweepam was very special to her.

Bhairava Dweepam was Roja’s first film starring Nandamuri Balakrishna.

Roja further stated that most of the movies that feature her opposite Nandamuri Balakrishna entertain the audience.

Roja added that NTR applauded for the opening scene of Bhairava Dweepam, and the film’s opening ceremony featured stars like Rajinikanth and Chiranjeevi along with other great filmmakers and directors. Roja said the film was a big sensation.

For the uninitiated, Bhairava Dweepam, released on April 14, 1994, won nine Nandi awards. The film was directed by Singeetam Srinivasa Rao from a story written by Raavi Kondala Rao. B. Venkatarama Reddy funded Bhairava Dweepam under the Chandamama Vijaya Pictures banner.

Bhairava Dweepam was a turning point in their acting career from Roja, her role in the film was critically acclaimed.

After Bhairava Dweepam, Roja and Nandamuri Balakrishna shared the screen in the movie Gandeevam. The film had Akkineni Nageswara Rao in the lead role. Despite its strong all-star cast, Gandeevam could not do well at the box office.

Bobbili Simham marked Nandamuri Balakrishna and Roja’s third collaboration. The film was declared a super hit at the box office.

Maato Pettukoku with Nandamuri Balakrishna, Roja and Rambha was released in 1995. The film turned out to be a box office disaster.

Roja played the role of Draupadi in Sri Krishnarjuna Vijayam, while Nandamuri Balakrishna appeared in the dual roles of – Krishna and Arjun. The film did not do well at the box office.

Sarath director Peddannayya featured Nandamuri Balakrishna and Roja for the sixth time as the lead pair. The film was a huge success at the box office.

Sultan, released in 1999, was Nandamuri and Roja’s seventh film together. The film was declared a box office success.

Roja started her political career in 1999 with the Telugu Desam party, while Nandamuri, who has campaigned for the Telugu Desam party in every election since its formation, entered the political battlefield in 2014.
