Central PA Theater and Dance Fest to celebrate the performing arts

VanDance is among the companies performing at the fifth Central PA Theater and Dance Fest.

The fifth year Central PA Theater and Dance Fest will feature more than 100 artists in dozens of Friday-Sunday performances, workshops and readings around State College.

Presented by local theater company Tempest Productions, the festival will host a kick-off event from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday at the Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza on South Fraser Street with performance previews, activities, crafts and food available. to buy at Duck Donuts and Juana’s.

Throughout the weekend, free and paid performances, workshops and readings will take place at 3 Dots, Blue Brick Theatre, Phoenix Academy, State Theater and Webster’s Bookstore Café.

The events will provide participants with opportunities to learn Egyptian dance, juggling, improvisation and performance techniques and to join the companies in performance. Shows include improv comedy, theatre, music, dance, cabaret, film and a play-reading contest.

Along with the festival, the 16th Annual Penn State Pow Wow takes place Saturday and Sunday at Mount Nittany Middle School.

Stacie Bird’s photography exhibition “Within a Mile of Home” will be presented at the University Wine Company, and Egyptian dancer Shannon Bishop will perform at Pine Grove Hall on Sunday.

The Central PA Theater and Dance Fest was founded in 2018 by two longtime members of the local theater community, Cynthia Mazzant and Elaine Meder-Wilgus, through the nonprofit theater company Tempest Productions Inc. The festival presents the professionals and pre-professionals of the county of Çentre. theater, dance, and other performing arts groups through an immersive weekend each summer, inviting local residents and visitors to experience State College as a performing arts destination.
