The Texas Repertory Theater announces the opening of its 2022 season at the Charles Bender Performing Arts Center with the inspirational comedy Educating Rita. This new production of the Olivier Award-winning play stars Texas Rep Artistic Director Steven Fenley and veteran Houston actress Erin Kidwell. Under the direction of Ed Muth, Educating Rita will open March 4 and play until March 13.
Winner of the prestigious Olivier Award, Educating Rita is a thoughtful and heartwarming comedy about the positive changes that friendship and learning can bring to a person’s life. When married hairstylist Rita enrolls in a college course to broaden her horizons, she doesn’t realize where the journey will take her. Frank is a middle-aged English tutor whose wry outlook on life drives him to drink and delve into his books. Enter Rita, an outspoken hairdresser with a thirst for learning. Their relationship as teacher and student blossoms, eventually giving Frank a new sense of self and Rita much-needed knowledge.
