Firefighting crews at Auckland film studio prove ‘difficult to extinguish’

A fire broke out at Auckland Film Studio with multiple crews and trucks battling the blaze on an outside wall.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) confirmed crews were at the Auckland Film Studio site in the western Auckland suburb of Henderson at 2pm today.

A FENZ spokesperson said the fire on an exterior studio wall was contained but difficult to fully extinguish.

Two pumping devices and two fire engines are currently dealing with the fire.

The police were not on the scene.

In 2014, a major fire at Henderson Studios at night destroyed a workshop and 16 fire crews attempted to contain the blaze.

In 2021, a $35 million rebuild and upgrade of the Auckland Film Studio, located on Hickory Avenue, was announced by Auckland Council and the government.

The studios comprise 30 acres of wooded land with a four square kilometer stage area and 1,215 square meters of production agent area. There are also two sound stages on site, each measuring 2336.3 m².

It is unclear which section of the Auckland Film Studio is on fire.

Production of major international films has taken place at the Auckland Film studio, including Disney’s Mulan, Amazon Prime’s new Lord of the Rings TV series, Whale Rider and The Chronicles of Narnia.
