Plaza Classic Film Festival kicks off with Rita Moreno

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – The Plaza Classic Film Festival started on Thursday, which has been scaled back in recent years during the pandemic to accommodate Covid-19 restrictions. Even though the films were shown, the Community Foundation of El Paso felt they missed the connection the festival had with people in the community.

That’s why they’re happy to be back at full capacity with all theaters open and more venues to play more movies that the El Paso Community Foundation program director says is about bringing people together. people.

It’s that common feeling that you get and when you’re sitting in the audience with a giant screen like that, it’s immersive and it’s you and the screen basically, but you also have collective responses like people screaming jaws or screaming tequila when the organist plays it.

Doug Pullen, Program Director, El Paso Community Foundation

During Moreno’s speech, she spoke fondly of her time here in the border region and her fond memories of seeing the theater in the original plaza.

You know what, it lives in my heart. I love this theater, I was here the very first time the seats were run down and I remember, and I just mentioned it before, you know, it’s just such a good memory.

Rita Moreno

The festival will host a talk with Moreno on Friday showing the 2021 version of West Side Story and his role in it as well. Whoever will be hosting the talk tomorrow is excited to experience the new West Side story with fellow moviegoers.

The 2021 West Side Story and talk about it and not necessarily the ties to the original but how this new release affects a whole new universe and a whole new generation of moviegoers who are really embracing this movie.

Felipa Solis, Critics Choice Member

Solis also says it’s important for new moviegoers to watch classic movies so they can enjoy the movies even more.

“It’s so important to recognize and appreciate the classic film. There’s so many bells and whistles you see in today’s film from CGI and it’s a way the classic film is meant to be seen on the big screen and for younger generations to see what filmmakers of the past were trying to achieve.”
