Hilary Thomas, Artistic Director of the Lineage Performing Arts Center in Pasadena, has made a career out of telling personal stories through dance and theater. His latest creation, Mother placesis a deeply personal performance about his relationship with his funny, wise and daring mother, Sonia.

The play stars Michelle Kolb and Elizabeth Gracen as Hilary and her mother, respectively, and features music by Lauren Wilmore and Jana Nakoa, with multimedia projections of Thomas dancing to complete the arc of the story.

Sonia, born in India in 1934 to British parents, moved to the United States as a young woman and lived a pioneering life as a psychiatrist, feminist and mother of Lineage artistic director Hilary Thomas, whom she encouraged to pursue dance and the performing arts. .

Sonia died in 2020 in Pasadena, and Mother places is young Thomas’ homage to his hilarious, complicated, and beautiful relationship with a larger-than-life woman.

“I spent the next year [my mother’s] death by reading his words obsessively,” Thomas says of his process of creating the show. “There was so much to digest… Before I knew it, this show revealed itself to me. Going back and forth between my mother’s words and my own, I was able to examine our relationship in a whole new way. Without his physical presence, I only had his words. I only had the version of her that lived inside me, in ‘mother’s place’ as she once described it.

Mother places runs April 8-16 at the Lineage Performing Arts Center in Pasadena. Tickets cost between $20 and $30, but no one is turned away for lack of funds. Visit for more information or email [email protected]
